Private Practice Mentoring for Therapists.
You've completed years of training to be a good therapist. You've seen many clients for many hours, and are ready to set up your own private practice. You feel prepared. You feel excited. But then... how to make a thriving and sustainable practice a reality?
It can all feel very unknown and very daunting.
We are taught to be skilled, effective, and ethical therapists. We often aren't taught how to set up in private practice or how to run a thriving and sustainable business.

Our core training is fundamental to becoming skilled, effective and ethical therapists.
CPD is excellent at developing our therapeutic knowledge and skills.
Supervision is a crucial and valuable support for our client work.
But the business side of private practice often falls between the cracks.
And yet, we need the business to work well to support us to be good therapists for the clients we care so deeply about.
There is general business support out there, but it can sit uncomfortably for therapeutic practitioners because it's often not attuned to what it means to be a therapist.
It can then feel like running an ethical practice and running a sustainable business are at odds, with each pulling you a different way. We can feel stuck, overwhelmed, and exhausted.
This is where mentoring can help.
Focus on your business wellbeing with someone who gets it.
I am an accredited therapist with 5+ years of experience, and I run my own thriving private practice. I bring the benefit of a 10-year background in business strategy and marketing, along with previous mentoring experience. You can find out more about me here.
Perhaps you:
-
Feel ready to set up in private practice as a counsellor or therapist, but you have no idea where to start.
-
Want your website and directory listings to really reflect who you are as a practitioner, but you can't find the words or voice that feels authentic to you.
-
Are struggling to communicate what makes you unique, resorting instead to well-worn jargon that doesn't feel right, and doesn't resonate with potential clients.
-
Want to make sure that aligned clients - those you would be a brilliant fit for - can find you, but you don't know how to reach them, and don't want to engage with the social media time drain*.
-
Want to find your way of doing private practice, pinning down what a successful and sustainable practice is for you, but other things keep taking priority.
-
Have a sense that business admin is taking up more time than it should, but you aren't sure how to make life easier.
*For now, I have chosen to build my private practice without the use of social media. This means that if you are looking for a mentor who can offer support and guidance in building a social media strategy, I'm not going to be the mentor for you.
Mentoring is where you can give your private practice the attention it needs and deserves.
Together we will tease out the answers to your questions, expand your ideas, and get things moving.

Hello, I'm Heather.
I'm a BACP-accredited counsellor and advanced accredited GSRD therapist, with 5+ years of experience. Prior to my counsellor training, I spent 10 years working in the world of business, strategy, and marketing. When I changed career, I imagined I was leaving this world behind. Yet the knowledge and skills I had gained in my past career turned out to be invaluable as I set up my private practice.
Within a year, I had a full practice.
Not only this, but it was a practice built in a way that worked for me, and that allowed me to enjoy my work.
Despite my previous experience, it still wasn’t easy. There are things that took me a long time to figure out, and things I wish I had done differently. And I imagine that this will continue to be the case as my practice evolves.
When trainees started to approach me for guidance around setting up in private practice, I realised how much I had learned along the way. I was struck by how much I enjoyed working with other practitioners who are passionate about therapy, and who want to build a successful business that will support them to focus on the client work they care so deeply about. My previous mentoring experience came to the fore – integrating with my therapeutic skills and my interest in writing – and I realised that I was able to support others to build their own sustainable, thriving private practice, their way.
How we can work together.
I offer support that is grounded in the reality of running a private practice, and that is tailored to you. I will provide a focused, supportive and collaborative space and I will act as a guide, facilitator, sounding board, and friendly critic.
